Even as states across the country roll back restrictions, concerning coronavirus variants spread, and the country’s vaccination campaign continues, a new wave of rising numbers of cases is occurring in certain regions of the country. COVID-19 Cases Surge in the Northeast and Upper Midwest
The Northeast now has more cases that are likely to grow as more places and businesses reopen steadily. There’s also a surge in the Upper Midwest as well. Other regions, like the South, fare far better and keep their numbers from rising. The exact cause of a surge in some regions and not others is puzzling for experts, but some think that warm weather in the South and decreased vaccinations could be factors.
Michigan has the highest surge of COVID-19 cases in the Upper Midwest. According to data, Michigan averages 5,443 new cases per day, Minnesota 1,695/day, and Illinois 2,689/day, while in the Northeast, New Jersey averages 2,720/day, while New York averages 4,597, which are elevated counts, but still an improvement from earlier spring numbers.
