When foreign bacteria enter the body, your body goes through an inflammatory response. Moreover, when bacteria and viruses invade the inner part of your throat or the pharynx, it causes Pharyngitis. Pharyngitis refers to the inflammation in the backside of the throat.
What is Pharyngitis?
Most people know Pharyngitis as a “sore throat.” A sore throat is one of the most common conditions that everyone encounters in their lifetime. It’s most evident, and instant symptoms cause disturbance inside the throat. This is the region where the inflammation takes place. You will experience a scratchy or itchy feeling in the throat, along with difficulties while swallowing. Pharyngitis is a common occurrence in the wintertime.
Causes
The most common cause of Pharyngitis is a virus. Pharyngitis is usually a result of viral infections such as influenza, common cold, and others. Viruses are RNA carrying particles that multiply once they enter a host, or in this case, a human body. There is no cure for a seasonal virus you cannot treat it with antibiotics or any other medication. Bacterial Pharyngitis does happen, although it is less common. Strep throat is the most common bacterial Pharyngitis. The name strep throat stems from the invasive virus, Streptococcus.
What are the Symptoms of a Sore Throat?
The symptoms of a sore throat can vary greatly. The underlying condition usually determines the number of symptoms that you can have with a sore throat. The most common symptoms you may have to deal with a sore throat are the following.
- Runny nose
- Frequent Sneezes
- Headache
- Body aches
- Weakness or tiredness
- Coughing
- Fatigue
- Chills
- Fever
- Difficulty in Swallowing ( Usually a symptom of strep throat)

Can Patients Prevent Sore Throat?
Since no medication can prevent viruses, if the sore throat results from a viral infection, the symptoms are likely to get better in a week. However, you can still take considerable measures for temporary relief until you get better. Many people resort to over-the-counter drugs for pain relief; however, even home remedies can help deal with Pharyngitis. Patients should increase their liquid and water intake, eat a healthy diet, and rest as much as possible.
Viral Pharyngitis is common and does not pose a serious threat to your health. That said, if you do get a sore throat, it is ideal that you contact urgent care for treatment immediately. You must ensure that you have an ordinary viral infection and not a dangerous bacterial infection. Therefore, do not take your chances and act fast.
