Summer Health Risks: Poison Ivy, Sumac & Oak

July 17, 2015

"

Summer is finally here along with BBQs and trips to the park! Summer also, unfortunately, comes along with increased risk of skin irritation from poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. These plants contain oil named Urushiol which causes itching, redness, bumps, and other symptoms of rash within 12 -72 hours of contact. Though rashes rarely become serious or life-threatening, severe reactions – which include swelling, blistering, and crusting skin – can occur and require urgent medical attention.

Mild rashes usually clear in a few weeks on their own. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable itching, minor swelling, and redness that come with skin irritation can be very uncomfortable. The following tips offer relief for your symptoms:

  • Press a cold compress on the affected area
  • Take an oatmeal bath
  • Apply anti-itch creams, lotions, or gels to the affected area
  • Take antihistamine medication to reduce your reaction
