Can I Have the Flu and COVID-19 at the Same Time?

Unfortunately, yes, it’s possible to have both the flu and COVID-19 at the same time. While health experts are still trying to figure out how common having the two respiratory illnesses can be, the fact of the matter is that is indeed possible to get sick with both.

If you were to get the flu and COVID-19 at the same time, it could potentially catastrophic to your immune system. Our AFC center provides further information on both common viruses below, so keep reading.

What Could COVID-19 and the Flu Do Together?

On their own, both COVID-19 and the flu attack the lungs, potentially causing pneumonia, fluid in the lungs or respiratory failure. Additionally, each illness can cause sepsis, cardiac injury and inflammation of the heart, brain or muscle tissues. While the flu typically causes less severe symptoms than COVID-19, serious complications are still possible.

Experts say that having both illnesses simultaneously would increase the risk of the heart, lungs, brain or muscle tissues being affected long-term. The potential for respiratory failure would also increase. Both the flu and COVID-19 have similar symptoms at times, so be on the lookout for the symptoms that we’ve listed below to stay healthy.

Flu and COVID-19 Symptoms

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches

  • Diarrhea
