What Can I Do to Combat Seasonal Allergies?

Allergies are the worst, and so many people deal with them every spring and summer. In fact, according to the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America, more than 50 million Americans deal with some sort of allergy each year.

If you tend to get the sneezes and sniffles during the spring and summer months, what are you supposed to do to feel better? Our AFC Urgent Care Athens, TN team shares some helpful answers below, so keep reading!

What Causes Allergies?

Allergies happen when the immune system reacts to a foreign substance that tries to enter the body.

The immune system produces antibodies, which identify a particular allergen as harmful. The antibodies go to work when you come in contact with an allergen, which can cause the skin, sinuses, airways or digestive system to become inflamed. The severity of seasonal allergies varies, but most people will suffer from the same symptoms, which we’ve listed below.

Common Seasonal Allergy Symptoms

  • Itchy, watery or red eyes
  • Circles under eyes
  • Itchy mouth, nose or throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Drainage from the nose down the back of the throat (postnasal drip)
  • Temporary loss of smell
  • Headache
  • Sneezing

Can Seasonal Allergies Be Treated?

Yes, they can. While seasonal allergies can’t really be cured, there are lots of things you can do to reduce the symptoms along the way.

The first step to reducing your symptoms is to know what causes them. If tree or grass pollen causes your seasonal allergies, be aware of the day’s pollen count and reduce your time outside. Whether or not pollen is the cause, though, OTC decongestants and antihistamines can also provide relief.

More Ways to Reduce Allergy Symptoms

  • Keep indoor air clean. You can do this by using a dehumidifier and vacuuming regularly. This will reduce the amount of harmful allergens that make their way inside the home.
  • After spending time outside, remove your clothes and shower to rinse pollen from your skin and hair.
  • If you are dealing with lots of congestion, consider rinsing your sinuses with saline solution. This will flush out mucus and allergens from your nose.
