First Aid for Burns

July 28, 2022

No one expects to get burned, but it happens more often than you might think. Burns are some of the most common injuries and can range from being a minor annoyance to life-threatening. Knowing what to do when someone gets burned can mean the difference between minor discomfort and extensive medical treatment.

AFC Urgent Care Aurora Saddle Rock has the tools and equipment to treat any minor to moderate burn. If you are suffering from a second-degree burn that is less than three inches, visit our walk-in center for immediate care. Don't suffer while waiting in the emergency room. Visit our center seven days a week.

Immediately run the burn under cold water for 3-5 minutes

This will help to stop the burning process and soothe the pain. This happens because when you run a burn under cold water, the heat is quickly removed from the area, and the tissue begins to

cool. This also helps to prevent further damage to the skin.

Apply a cold, damp cloth to the burn

This will help to keep the area cool and moist, which can aid in healing. It is important not to use ice, as this can further damage the tissue.

Apply a sterile gauze bandage (if available)

If you have a sterile gauze bandage, apply it to the burn. If you do not have a sterile gauze bandage, you can use a clean cloth. Do not apply ointments, butter, or other home remedies to the burn.

Take ibuprofen if you're in pain

If you're in pain, you can take ibuprofen. This will help to reduce both the pain and inflammation.

You can safely take up to 600 milligrams (mg) every four to six hours. Do not take more than the recommended dosage, as this can cause stomach bleeding.

Do not break blisters

Blisters help to protect the burn from infection. If they are broken, there is a greater risk of infection. Blisters may form as the skin heals and will eventually pop on its own.

If the burn is more serious, seek medical attention immediately

If the burn is more serious, you will need to seek medical attention immediately. More serious burns may require a hospital stay and skin grafts.

If the burn is larger than your palm, or if it is on the face, hands, feet, groin, or buttocks, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Burns can be very painful and cause significant damage to the skin. However, there are steps that can be taken to help minimize the damage and make the healing process easier. Visit AFC Urgent Care Aurora Saddle Rock for burn treatment and care. Our medical providers are all board-certified, so you will receive high-quality health care with every visit!
