Does a Sore Throat Mean COVID-19?

October 1, 2023

There are so many ways that you can get sick these days that it can be really hard to tell what illness you have on your own. Colds, the flu and even COVID-19 can all cause similar symptoms, so getting a proper diagnosis is always recommended.

We have a variety of rapid tests at our disposal that we can run to help determine what you have.

Our AFC Urgent Care Ballantyne team is here to help explain the differences between a few of the more common illnesses like the flu, COVID-19 and strep throat, so read on to learn more.

All three illnesses are classified as infections, with strep throat caused by a bacteria and COVID-19 and the flu caused by viruses. All three can be transmitted by interactions with infected people via a cough or a sneeze, or they can be contracted by touching an infected surface and then not washing your hands.

A fever, sore throat, body aches and a headache are common symptoms for all three illnesses, which can make it really hard to distinguish in the beginning stages. Coming to our center for a quick rapid test is the easiest path to a diagnosis.

Illnesses That Our Rapid Tests Can Identify

Can I Stay at Home and Just Treat My Symptoms?

Knowing what you are sick from can help make sure you are getting the most accurate treatment for your specific illness. This is especially true for strep throat as antibiotics are usually the best course of treatment. If you notice white patches on the back of your throat or are having trouble swallowing because your throat hurts so badly, come see us for an evaluation.

If you think you have COVID-19, it is also important to be tested! If you do contract the infection, removing yourself from school or work is crucial to reducing the spread. Antiviral drug treatments are also on the market, and the faster you can take them, the better they can work.
