Is COVID-19 Still a Threat?

September 15, 2023

We are so grateful that the height of the pandemic is currently behind us, but we can’t change the fact that COVID-19 is still in our community and will continue circulating and mutating into different strains.

The different strains and outbreaks come in waves, and we have recently seen an uptick in cases in the southern states. This means we all need to be hyper-aware of our surroundings to avoid getting sick. Remember, you can still get COVID-19 even if you have already had it previously.

Our AFC Urgent Care Ballantyne team explains more about the current COVID-19 symptoms below so you can take action right away if you start to feel sick.

Is COVID-19 Still Dangerous?

Like always, COVID-19 disproportionately affects immunocompromised people, young children and the elderly, and it still has the ability to make someone very sick. That doesn’t mean you aren’t at risk, though, even if you don’t fall into one of those categories. COVID-19 still circulates quickly through populations, and you just have no way of knowing if this current strain will cause you to become really ill.

Thankfully, there are som reliable antiviral drugs that are available to help people overcome the infection faster. This is why you should come see us for a rapid test as soon as you start feeling sick! The faster you get this treatment, the better chance you have of avoiding serious symptoms. Stop by any day of the week for a quick test.

Possible Symptoms From COVID-19

  • Sudden fever
  • Chills
  • Persistent cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue or muscle aches

How Can I Avoid COVID-19 This Year?

By getting vaccinated, of course! You should stay current on any available boosters. This is still important if you have already gotten over a COVID-19 infection as not all strains produce the same immunity. Anyone over the age of 6 months is eligible, and the latest boosters will be available in late September or October.

In addition to your vaccine, practice proper handwashing and avoid coming into contact with infected people, just like you would any other illness. You should also reconsider spending time in large crowds or in densely populated areas.

Emergent COVID-19 Symptoms

  • Respiratory distress
  • Persistent chest pain or pressure
  • Confusion
  • Pale, gray or blue-colored skin and lips
