Ways to Prevent Falling at Home- AFC Urgent Care

When kids fall at home, it’s typically no big deal. Their bones and muscles are bound to withstand much more punishment.

When older adults fall, however, the results can be much more serious. In fact, since 2007, fall death rates have increased every year, according to the CDC.

There are many ways to lower your risk of falling at home, and our AFC Urgent Care Ballantyne team shares some of them below.

  • Here’s what to do: Stay physically active. This is one of the best things you can do to lower your risk of falling at home. Exercising for at least 150 minutes each week will build strength and improve balance.
  • What to do next: Have your eyes checked. Not being able to see well can greatly increase the risk of falling. If your vision is getting a little worse, be sure to update your eyeglasses if needed.
  • What to do after: Make your home safer. You can do this by getting rid of or moving things that can be easily tripped over, such as loose wires and boxes. If rugs are loose, make them more secure by putting a sticky rug-holder underneath.
  • Something else to do: Make the bathroom safer. Many falls happen due to slippery surfaces, and the bathroom is typically the most slippery room in the home. To help, do things like adding non-slip mats in the bathtub and shower and installing grab bars in strategic points around the bathroom.
  • Another tip: Make sure your indoor space is well-lit. No matter your age, it is tough to see in a dark space. If you have dim light bulbs, replace them with brighter ones. If you don’t want brighter overhead lighting, add more lamps.
  • One more thing: Wear safe footwear. Floppy slippers and socks can increase your chances of slipping and falling. Instead, wear properly fitting, sturdy shoes with nonskid soles or socks with rubber grips on the bottom.
  • Action steps to take: Talk with your doctor about your potential fall risk. In addition, ask your doctor or pharmacist to review your medications to see if any might make you dizzy or sleepy, which can increase your risk of falling.
  • Doctor recommendations: If the unfortunate happens and you do fall, don’t hesitate to visit our AFC center to get an X-ray to be safe. Bruising and swelling can be signs of a broken bone, so if you experience these symptoms, get medical care quickly.
