What Causes a Yeast Infection?- AFC Urgent Care

Although they’re uncomfortable to talk about and certainly uncomfortable to experience, vaginal yeast infections are very common among women. In fact, up to three of four women will experience a yeast infection at some point in their lives.

Keep reading as our AFC Urgent Care Ballantyne team further highlights this common infection below.

What Causes Yeast Infections?

A vaginal yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is a common condition. The fungus, Candida (yeast), is a naturally occurring microorganism in the vaginal area. Lactobacillus bacteria keeps its growth in check.

If there’s an imbalance in your system, however, these bacteria won’t work effectively. This, in turn, leads to an overgrowth of yeast, which causes the symptoms of vaginal yeast infections.

Yeast Infection Symptoms

  • Vaginal itching
  • Swelling around the vagina
  • Burning during urination or sex
  • Pain during sex
  • Soreness
  • Redness
  • Rash

How Can They Be Treated?

For most yeast infections, doctors typically prescribe a one-to-three-day regimen of an antifungal cream, ointment, tablet or suppository. These medications can be in either a prescription or and over-the-counter (OTC) form. Some at-home remedies, such as Greek yogurt, coconut oil and boric acid can be helpful as well, but it’s important to consult your doctor or medical professional before trying them.

We’ve listed a few ways you can help prevent yourself from developing a yeast infection below.

Things to Avoid to Lower Yeast Infection Risk

  • Tight-fitting pantyhose
  • Douching, which removes some of the normal bacteria in the vagina that protect from infection
  • Scented feminine products, including bubble bath, pads and tampons
  • Hot tubs and very hot baths
  • Unnecessary antibiotic use, such as for colds or other viral infections
  • Staying in wet clothes, such as swimsuits and workout attire, for long periods of time
