The head cold, also known as the common cold, is usually normal to catch during the cold and flu season, but having it can impact your daily life.  Bouts of coughing, sneezing, and a pounding headache can leave you feeling tired and rundown for a few days.

While most colds are mild and can last for generally a week, people who are easily susceptible and have weak immune systems can develop more serious illnesses such as a sinus infection, bronchitis, or pneumonia.

What is a head cold?

A head cold usually involves symptoms in your head, such as a headache, runny or stuffy nose, water eyes.  Some other symptoms you may experience with a head cold include:

  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Low-grade fever
  • General ill feeling

Symptoms of a head cold usually appear within three days after being exposed to the virus, and your symptoms can last for up to 10 days.

  • A fever higher than 101F
  • A severe sore throat
  • A severe headache
  • Earache/pain
  • Pain around your nose or eyes
  • Rash
  • Excessive fatigue

How can I treat a head cold?

There’s not real cure for cold.  But you can alleviate your symptoms with home remedies such as:

  • Drinking lots of fluids
  • Using saltwater gargles
  • Using a vaporizer or humidifier
  • Taking over the counter pain medicines
  • Getting plenty of bed rest

How can I prevent getting sick?

Take these steps to avoid getting sick, especially during cold and flu season:

  • Practice good hygiene such as frequently washing your hands
  • Keep your hands away from your face
  • Don’t share items such as eating utensils, towels, and other personal items
  • Boost your immunity by adopting a healthy lifestyle of eating a well-balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, getting seven to eight hours of sleep, and managing your stress
  • Avoid coming into contact with anyone who’s sick
