Why Sports Physicals Are Needed for Winter Sports

School sports keep going no matter what the season, and if your child is playing winter sports they are going to need a physical before they start. Many schools and city leagues offer a range of sports in the winter including both individual and team sports. Any sport done through a league or school is going to require a physical before your child can start to make sure that they are healthy enough to play.

The Most Common Winter Sports

When people think of winter sports they usually think of outdoor sports and there are plenty of outdoor winter sports but there are some sports that are offered in the winter that are played inside too. The most common winters sports are:

  • Hockey
  • Skiing, both Cross Country and Downhill
  • Snowboarding
  • Ice Skating
  • Basketball
  • Swimming
  • Wrestling

Some schools may host winter indoor activities that aren’t technically part of a sports league but require a physical to participate like kickball, volleyball, or pickleball. In some schools classes also have weekly fun nights where parents and kids can participate in games and activities. Kids may need to have a physical as well as a signed permission slip to attend those events. It’s a good idea to get a winter physical for your child if their school offers events like that even if they don’t play an organized winter sport.

Why Sports Physicals Are Important

Sports physicals may seem like they’re not that important but it’s actually very important for coaches and parents to know that kids healthy and in good enough shape to play a sport before they start. Kids can have medical issues that haven’t been diagnosed yet that could make them more likely to suffer from broken bones, sprains, strains, muscle tears, respiratory issue, and more if they play a particular sport.

And if kids do have an injury or develop a medical condition from playing a sport it’s easier for parents to prove that the sport caused it if there is a physical on record saying the child was healthy before playing the sport.
