Winter Safety Issues to Watch For

Winter is a wonderful time of year, but it’s also a dangerous time of year. The harsh winter weather brings many potential safety risks that you need to watch out for. Once you know the risks, you can take steps to prevent them! Check out these 3 common winter safety issues you may face this season.

Shoveling Risks

Shoveling snow comes with a variety of risks. From pulled muscles to fractures and even heart attack, there’s no denying the danger in this common activity. Shoveling snow is something that has to be done, but it should be done with caution.

You should avoid caffeine and nicotine before you shovel. Consuming either of those substances increases your risk of heart attack when combined with the cold weather. You should also take a few minutes to stretch and warm up your muscles before grabbing the shovel. This helps prevent pulled muscles and back injury. Remember to push the snow with your shovel, don’t lift it!

Fall Risks

The slippery conditions pose a high fall risk for people of all ages. Prevent falls by spreading rock salt or kitty litter along slipper walkways and entrances. You should also wear winter-appropriate footwear to provide a little extra traction.

As tempting as it is to put your hands in your coat pockets to stay warm, this makes it easier to get injured in a fall. Your hands won’t be out and able to catch you as you fall, which could result in a serious fracture. Instead of using your pockets, opt for a warm pair of mittens that leave your hands available to catch your weight if need be!

Prepare for the Worst

Unfortunately, even the best prevention doesn’t always work to keep winter related injuries at bay. Prepare for the worst by getting familiar with your near-by urgent care center, walk-in clinic, and hospital.

Utilize the urgent care or walk-in clinic for all non-emergent injuries to get quicker and more affordable treatment. If you believe you may be having a heart attack or can’t catch your breath, call 911 right away.

In the event of a winter related injury or illness, visit your local urgent care right away to receive the care that you need. With on site x-ray imaging and experienced medical professionals, you’ll get the treatment you need without taking a trip to the crowded hospital!
