Those lazy days of summer are coming to an end and it’s time to focus on preparing for the new school year. No matter what grade your child is about to enter, it’s always a good idea to start the new school year off with a back-to-school physical.
Some children that participate in sports may have already had a sports physical this summer. While a sports physical does cover some of what happens during an annual physical or exam, a sports physical is limited because it is hyper focused on athletic issues. A standard back-to-school physical focuses on one’s overall well-being and addresses concerns that will not be discussed during a sports physical. Therefore, it is important that your child have both a sports physical as well as a standard back-to-school physical. For your convenience, American Family Care can usually complete both at the same time.
Childhood is a time of rapid physical, mental, and emotional growth. Your child’s annual school physical is a great opportunity to get an update on their current development. Your doctor will track your child’s height/weight, monitor heart and blood pressure, listen to their lungs/breathing and examine their ears, nose and throat. Often, doctors use this annual visit to discuss diet, minimal exercise options (if applicable), provide vision screenings, and do some standard blood/urine tests.
This is also the ideal time to get caught up on any vaccinations they may have missed. Some schools have mandatory vaccination requirements that your child will have to get before they can be enrolled for the new school year. Be sure to bring any immunization records or forms you have with you. This annual physical gives you the opportunity to address important questions or concerns about your child that you have as a parent.
Children change a lot in the span of a year, so it’s crucial to keep those annual exams to track their growth and development. The end of summer is an extremely busy time. At AFC, we are open daily with extended hours for your convenience. Click here to find a location near you.
