Strep throat is an infection in the throat and tonsils that typically require antibiotic treatments. Throat infections – like strep throat – are caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. This type of bacteria causes extreme discomfort, and is most common in young children.
Common symptoms of strep throat include:

- Severe pain when swallowing
- Fever
- Red/swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches of pus
- Tiny red spots (petechiae) on the area at the back of the roof of the mouth
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- Body aches or rash
