National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to breastcancer.org, 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime, and an estimated 2,470 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year. It’s important that you know how to detect breast cancer and ways to lower your risk of developing it.

Early Detection

There are three specific ways to increase the chances of early detection of breast cancer set by the American Cancer Society.

  1. Breast Self-Exam – Every woman should perform a breast self-exam once a month. If you notice any changes, alert your doctor.
  2. Clinical Breast Exam – Performed by a health professional who is trained to recognize any abnormalities in breast tissue, a clinical breast exam can be done by your general physician or gynecologist at your annual visit.
  3. Mammogram – Women 40 and over should get a mammogram every year.

Reducing Your Risk

You cannot prevent breast cancer, but there are a few ways to reduce your risk of developing it:

  1. Limit alcohol
  2. Don’t smoke
  3. Maintain a healthy weight
  4. Be physically active

There are many ways you can donate or volunteer with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. To learn more visit: https://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/.
