I Have Throat and Ear Pain While Swallowing. What’s Causing It?

Experiencing pain in your throat and ears while swallowing? This could be a sign that you have an infection from a virus or bacteria. Other possible causes include allergies or smoking.

What’s Causing the Pain?

Before deciding how to treat the pain, you must understand what is causing your throat and ear pain while swallowing. There are several potential reasons why you are experiencing throat and ear pain when swallowing. The most common culprit is a viral infection. When your throat becomes infected, it can lead to inflammation and irritation, causing both throat and ear pain. These infections can include strep throat, tonsillitis, or the common cold. Often, an antibiotic will help clear up these infections within a few days.

Additionally, swollen lymph nodes in the neck due to an illness can contribute to discomfort during swallowing, which may radiate to the ears. Lymph nodes usually swell as the result of fighting an infection from bacteria or viruses. The lymph nodes play an important role in the body fighting infections as they trap viruses, bacteria, or other illnesses before they can infect other parts of the body.

Can a Sore Throat Cause Ear Pain?

A sore throat can cause ear pain. The throat and ears are connected through a network of nerves, so pain in the throat can extend to the ears.

Finding Relief

Here are some ways you can feel better when you have a sore throat.

  • Suck on ice chips, popsicles, or lozenges. Avoid giving lozenges to children under the age of 4.
  • Use a clean humidifier or cool mist vaporizer.
  • Gargle with salt water.
  • Drink warm beverages and plenty of fluids.
  • Use hone to relieve cough for adults and for children who are 1 year of age or older.
  • Ask your medical provider or pharmacist about over-the-counter medicines that can help you feel better. Always use over-the-counter medicines as directed.

Visit an Urgent Care For Help
