Frequently Asked Questions About COVID-19

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a previously undetected virus that has quickly spread worldwide since its initial discovery in China in December 2019. Nearly 250,000 cases have been diagnosed in Colorado alone. The virus affects the upper respiratory system. Due to the relative age of the virus, much is still unknown and being researched, including its long term effects and a vaccination. What is known is how the virus is spread, which is through direct contact with an infected person, surface or object or via community spread, which is from an unknown point of origin including communal surfaces.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Symptoms of COVID-19 vary from case to case, from mild flu-like symptoms to more severe symptoms. Many patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 have not experienced any symptoms at all. Symptoms associated with COVID-19 include:

  • Dry cough
  • Fever (over 102 F)
  • Chest congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Head and full body aches

Symptoms may begin to develop between two and fourteen days after exposure to COVID-19. High-risk patients including the elderly, pregnant women and patients with underlying health conditions should practice social distancing whenever possible and wear protective masks and gloves to reduce the chance of exposure.

How can I avoid contracting COVID-19?

You can reduce the risk of coming into contact with COVID-19 by taking the following steps:

  • Wash your hands frequently throughout the day, especially after time outside or in public areas. You should also make sure you are washing up before and after handling raw or unprepared food. Use antibacterial soap or hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content if water is unavailable. Please note that while hand sanitizer can kill germs, it will not be able to break down any dirt or buildup on your hands.
  • Wipe down your most commonly used objects, devices and surfaces with antibacterial and germ-killing wipes or cleaning agents at least once per day. Germs can stay alive longer on surfaces than your hands, allowing the virus to quickly transfer from a surface to your body upon contact.
  • Avoid touching your face, eyes, mouth and nose with unwashed hands.
  • If you feel a sneeze or cough, cover your nose and mouth to contain germs.
  • Check local health and safety guidelines before going out in public and participating in activities. Wear a mask or face covering to protect yourself and avoid breathing in germs, and wear gloves when possible. Practice social distancing and avoid unnecessary trips when possible.

  • Why choose AFC for Urgent Care?

With state-of-the-art centers and a professional medical team, AFC provides on-site X-rays, labs, procedures, and more!

  • What's the difference between AFC Urgent Care and emergency room services?

Urgent care is for medical conditions that require prompt attention but do not pose an immediate threat to your health or life. Here is a simple rule of thumb: if your medical issues(s) are life threatening, call 911, or go directly to a hospital emergency room. If not, an urgent care center such as AFC is an excellent alternative.
