Bronchitis is when the bronchial tubes in the lungs become inflamed. These tubes carry air to and from your lungs. This can cause a shortness of breath or wheezing. Bronchitis can be classified as either acute or chronic. Acute is commonly caused by a flu or a cold and is short term. Most cases go away on their own. Chronic bronchitis is ongoing and/or frequent. Smoking can increase the chances of getting bronchitis, specifically chronic.
Doctors can diagnose bronchitis with a chest x-ray or a lab test. Treatment sometimes includes use of a humidifier, lots of fluids, and pain medications. Antibiotics may be prescribed for chronic bronchitis.
