Flu Season is Coming Sooner Than You Think!

August 19, 2015

Not only is back to school season back in swing, but now flu season will be sneaking up on us very soon. Flu season can be very unpredictable. New viruses appear each year so you need to be prepared to protect you and your loved ones. The timing, severity, and length of the season varies every year as well. There are ways to protect yourself and your family from the virus.

It is recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) that everyone over the age of 6 months and older to receive the annual influenza vaccination (flu shot). Children between 6 months and 8 years of age may need two doses of flu vaccine to be fully protected from flu.

The flu vaccine typically becomes available during the months of September and October so it would be ideal to receive the vaccination after it is released.

There are other ways to take care of yourself such as:

  • Keeping distance from those who appear to be sick or showing any symptoms (EX: fever, cough/sore throat, body aches, runny/stuff nose).
  • Washing your hands numerous times throughout the day to reduce the spread of germs.
  • Using anti-bacterial cleaning items throughout the home, school, and work.
  • If you do become sick, stay home from school or work to prevent spreading the virus any more.

The flu shot is available every day during the fall at AFC Urgent Care in Bridgeport. No appointment is needed and most major and CT state insurances are accepted. Visit us at 161 Boston Avenue or call us at 203-333-4400.
