Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)

March 10, 2014

Pink Eye, or the technical term Conjunctivitis, is the inflammation of the Conjunctiva, the outermost layer of the eye. It is highly contagious. It can be viral, bacterial, or due to an allergic reaction. Red eye, swelling, and watering of eyes are common symptoms. If it is bacterial, symptoms will also include discharge.

To prevent pink eye, avoid rubbing your eyes. Never share contact lenses. Wash your hands frequently. If you encounter someone with pink eye, make sure to wash and sanitize all surfaces and your hands. Before you go swimming, wear goggles to prevent bacteria becoming trapped in your eye. Also remove contact lenses before you swim.

If the pink eye is viral, it will go away on its own. Bacterial pink eye can be treated with an antibiotic. If it is caused by an allergy, treatment includes an antihistamine or allergy eye drops. Symtoms can be releived by applying a col wet towel over the eye several times a day. Due to the contagious nature of pink eye, avoid letting others come in contact with your eye or anything used near it, including towels or pillow cases.
