Winter Sports: Don’t Freeze Your Fun!

January 19, 2016

As we wait for snow to arrive this season it is also time to gear up for all the excitement that comes with winter sports. These outdoor sports include sled riding, skiing, hockey, ice-skating, and snowboarding. Millions of people flock to the parks, ski slopes and skating rinks Jerrissa Jaramillo, 4, hangs on tight as she speeds down the hill near the intersection of College Boulevard and 30th Street on Monday afternoon.every year.

Dr. Kelly Powers, a podiatrist at Associated Podiatrists of Fairfield mentioned that “snowboarding boots are typically softer than ski boots therefore putting the individual at a higher risk for ankle injuries, including ankle sprains and tibia or fibula fractures. Snowboarders are partially vulnerable to fracturing the talus bone, commonly referred to as “snowboarders ankle. It’s important to invest in a well-designed boot and have it properly fit by a professional. If you are experiencing chronic foot or ankle pain while skiing, custom-made orthotics may provide symptomatic relief and get you in a better anatomical alignment. Be sure to follow up with a podiatrist/ podiatric surgeon to further discuss proper treatment plans for any foot and ankle injuries or chronic pain.”

In the United State during the year of 2013, 3.8 million people were treated for winter sports-related injuries. There were 700,000 cases of sledding- related injuries leading it to be the most common injury that year. Injuries related to common winter sports include strains, sprains, dislocations, and fractures. In most cases these types of injuries happen at the end of day when people try to get in the last run before the day’s end and end up overexerting themselves.
