5 Reasons Urgent Care is Your Best Bet

September 2, 2014

Seasonal allergies such as hay fever impact millions of Americans every year, which may lead to lower productivity, increased fatigue, and several uncomfortable day-to-day symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate that over 20 million people in the U.S are diagnosed with hay fever annually.

Additionally, over 8 million people reported a respiratory allergy in the last year, highlighting the widespread effect of seasonal allergies in the U.S. The good news is that seasonal allergies are highly preventable with a few household maintenance and personal care tips. So what should you do to prevent spring, summer, and other seasonal allergies?

Reduce exposure to allergy triggers when possible

It may be difficult to reduce exposure to allergy triggers since everyday activities like going outside increase exposure to allergens. However there are a few ways to reduce everyday contact with triggers:

  • Try to avoid staying outside for too long on dry and windy days. The best time to go outside is after a rainy day.
  • Find a way to have another person handle activities such as landscaping and gardening to help reduce allergen triggers.
  • Take a shower or wash after going outside to wash off pollen and similar allergens.
  • Wear a pollen mask if you stay outside for prolonged periods.

Be mindful of the quality of your household/indoor air

Air quality is one of the most significant contributors to seasonal allergies. Taking the the time to improve the quality of the air in your house during the spring and summer will reduce your chances of getting allergies.

For starters, make sure that any air conditioning units in your house have clean filters and are not spreading around dust or mold. Additionally, individuals at risk for seasonal allergies should dust frequently, use a dehumidifier in certain parts of your house like the bedroom, and keep windows closed when possible.

Use over-the-counter medications when appropriate

Whenever you start to experience seasonal allergies try using over-the-counter medications for symptom relief. Just make sure to double check with your doctor and use the medicines as instructed.

The types of over-the-counters medicines that help reduce allergy symptoms include:

  • Nasal spray
  • Decongestants
  • Oral antihistamines
  • Combination medicines
