Causes & Symptoms of RSV

According to the CDC, RSV is one of three major respiratory illnesses in the US which cause severe illness nationwide. Aligning with the CDC’s predictions, RSV cases have been higher in the 2023/2024 respiratory illness season compared to previous years. RSV is caused by a viral infection. The RSV virus is very contagious through airborne transmission as well as direct and indirect contact with infected individuals. RSV can infect anyone, however, it causes the most severe illness in young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

RSV symptoms can last up to two weeks. In healthy adults, RSV symptoms are mild and often mimic symptoms of a mild cold. However, in rare cases or in the case of those who are at risk for severe illness, RSV can cause serious complications such as trouble breathing.

Common RSV symptoms include:

  • Congestion
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Cough

RSV Prevention Tips

RSV tends to spread quickly during the winter illness season. This is largely due to the increased time that we tend to spend indoors, which causes us to have more close contact with others. In order to stay healthy during the winter illness season, it is important to take precautionary steps. Here are some simple tips for how you can avoid contracting RSV this winter:

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Carry hand sanitizer
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Avoid touching surfaces like door handles when possible
  • Give others their personal space
  • Stay away from anyone with illness symptoms

Viral infections are extremely infected. If possible it is best to avoid inclosed spaces where you may come in contact with infected individuals. However, if you can’t, being aware of your hygiene practices is a great way to kill germs before they can infect you.

Who Is Eligible for the RSV Vaccine?

Although the virus only causes mild illness in most healthy adults, RSV can cause serious illness for some. This is specifically the case for anyone with a compromised immune system. If you or someone you love has a compromised immune system, or is considered at risk for severe illness caused by RSV, they may be eligible for the RSV vaccine.

The CDC reccomends that anyone over the age of 60 receive a single dose of the RSV vaccine in order to protect them from severe illness. Pregnant women who are between 32 and 36 weeks pregnant can also receive the RSV vaccine. Receiving the vaccine at the end of pregnancy will provide protection for the baby for up to 6 months after they are born. If you fall within these categories, or have a heart or lung condition which could make you experience complications due to RSV, speak to your healthcare provider to determine if you’re eligible for the vaccine.
