Is it just the “common cold?” When should you self-treat and when should you be seen by a doctor at your nearest AFC Urgent Care?
The common cold can be the result of more than 100 different types of viruses! By and large, the symptoms are self-limited and can include any of the following:
– Runny or stuffy nose
– Sore or scratchy throat
– Body aches
– Mild fatigue
– Mild anorexia
– Sneezing
– Watery eyes
– Cough
There are some home remedies you can employ – and preventive measures, too – to minimize the spread and severity of your symptoms:
– Get plenty of rest
– Stay well hydrated
– Wash hands frequently
– No sharing of glasses or utensils
– Over-the-counter pain relievers
– Decongestants
– Breathe steam
What are some potential complications?
Anyone at the extremes of age – the very young or old – is at greater risk of possible complications. Additionally, individuals with heart or lung disease, chronic smokers, or those with immunocompromise (such as those with diabetes, hepatitis, HIV, lupus, or taking steroids) are also at increased risk of complications. These may include:
– Dehydration
– Pneumonia
– Strep throat
– Flu
– Persistent Bronchospasm
– Sepsis
When should you be evaluated?
If you develop any of the following, please consider being seen by a medical professional:
– Fever
– Sweats
– Lightheadedness or passing out
– Cough with colored or thick phlegm
– Shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
– Vomiting
