Sinus infections make people feel miserable. From the pressure in your face and head, to the headaches and fatigue – no one likes having them. This article will walk you through the best ways to prevent sinus infections, as well as what you can do to get rid of them should you find yourself coming down with one.

To avoid getting sinus infections:

Wash your hands.

Be sure you are washing your hands multiple times per day – especially if you are near people who are exhibiting cold-like symptoms such as coughing or sneezing. It is really important to wash your hands before eating to help prevent the spread of germs.

Sanitize everything.

Along with keeping your hands clean, you should also keep spaces such as your desk, computer, doorknobs, and other surfaces clean with antibacterial wipes.

Moisturize your nose.

Use a nasal spray to help moisturize your nasal passages. When your nasal passages are not dried out, they are better able to keep germs out.

If you do end up with a sinus infection, here are a few remedies you can try to get rid of it quickly:

Take over-the-counter medicines.

If you have a sinus infection, you probably also have pain, fever, and headaches. Over-the-counter medicines such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen can all be used to help relieve your symptoms. You might also consider medications that are aimed towards clearing up the sinuses.

Use nasal spray.

Use an over-the-counter nasal spray. Be sure to read the directions for your nasal spray, as misuse can result in increased inflammation, which can mean your infection sticks around longer.

Irrigate your nose.

If you haven’t considered a neti pot before, now might be the time. Nasal irrigation with a neti pot has been shown to relieve the symptoms and length of a sinus infection.

See a doctor.

See a doctor if your sinus infection lasts longer than 7 days. Your doctor may prescribe medication, depending on whether your sinus infection is bacterial or viral. He or she can also help you determine the best over-the-counter treatment options to consider for relief as well, especially if what you are currently using does not seem to be helping.
