When to Visit Urgent Care with the Flu

October 24, 2019

The flu virus is extremely common, with its season running from the beginning of fall through late spring. As the seasons change and temperatures begin to fluctuate, your immune system will need time to adjust which can make you vulnerable. While certain symptoms can be treated with at-home care, more serious cases should be brought to a medical professional for assessment.

Common flu symptoms

Symptoms of the influenza virus may vary case by case. Not everyone will exhibit all symptoms. Common signs that are associated with influenza include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Body aches and headache
  • Runny or stuffed nose
  • Fatigue
  • Dehydration
  • Vomiting/diarrhea

What should I do if I develop flu symptoms?

If you develop flu-like symptoms, you should avoid going out to avoid potentially infecting others for at least 24 hours to let the fever break. Drink plenty of fluids: it doesn’t always need to be water. You can drink fruit juice, tea, sports drinks and eat soup in order to get nutrients you need. Take time to rest so your body can recover. Adults can take over-the-counter drugs such as ibuprofen to provide relief for headaches and body aches. However, you should never give children under the age of 18 aspirin, which can lead to a condition called Reye’s Syndrome that causes liver and brain damage.

When should I visit urgent care with flu symptoms?

If you are a high-risk patient, you should visit a doctor for a proper diagnosis of the flu and to make sure there are not other issues present including infections. People who would be considered high-risk include children, pregnant women, senior citizens, or patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes, cancer and HIV. Chronic conditions will weaken your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to complications.

If you are not a high-risk patient, you should visit urgent care with symptoms if:

  • Your symptoms are not showing signs of improvement
  • You have a persistent fever that is not breaking and is climbing (102 degrees is considered high for an adult)
  • You are losing fluids and displaying symptoms of dehydration
  • You are persistently vomiting and have diarrhea
