Do I Have an Upper Respiratory Infection?

November 4, 2023

Getting sick during the fall and winter seasons is always annoying, but it is unfortunately the most common time to fall ill. With all of the increased time spent indoors and the rise in different infections, getting sick is sometimes just a part of life.

One of the frustrating things about this time of year is that many circulating infections can share similar symptoms, so it can be hard to know what you are suffering from initially.

While most infections are mild to moderate, some can be more dangerous. Read on as our AFC Urgent Care Chapman Highway team explains more about the dangers of RSV.

What is RSV?

RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus, is an infection that affects the breathing passageways. As it settles and grows in this area, the airways can become inflamed, making breathing normally more difficult. For adults and otherwise healthy individuals, RSV is more of a nuisance than anything.

However, RSV is much more dangerous for small children and infants. Children’s airways are naturally much smaller than ours, which means that any sort of inflammation can pose serious breathing troubles for your child. Keeping a close eye on his or her symptoms is crucial in the days that follow after the initial cold-like symptoms begin.

Beginning Symptoms Associated With RSV

  • Fever
  • Runny nose/congestion
  • Shallow breathing
  • Cough
  • Muscle or body aches

Should RSV Be Treated?

Treating the symptoms of RSV can help you or your child find relief, but there is unfortunately no quick fix for RSV. The virus just has to run its course and will have to fight against your immune system until your body eventually wins and you start to feel better. In the meantime, rest, drink fluids and eat well to support this process.

While it is important to remember that most RSV infections aren’t serious and will most likely fade away in about a week, RSV can also quickly progress into a medical emergency. If you notice any signs of respiratory distress, seek medical attention immediately.

Signs of Respiratory Distress

  • Shallow breathing
  • Blue skin or fingernails
  • Feeling lethargic or extremely tired
  • Chest pain
