Do Seasonal Allergies Have a Cure?

Believe it or not, spring is already here! As we all embrace the warmer temperatures and sunnier days ahead, spring also means allergy season for many of us.

Seasonal allergies can be a minor nuisance, or they can be severe enough to cause widespread symptoms and discomfort. They tend to peak in the spring as tree, grass and weed pollen are more widespread in the air.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, check out AFC Urgent Care Chapman Highway’s latest blog all about treating allergies below!

Where Do Seasonal Allergies Come From?

When you have an allergic reaction to something, your body has recognized whatever it is as an intruder. It initiates an immune response similar to when you are exposed to a virus or bacteria. While things like pollen aren’t inherently dangerous to you, your body can still have a negative reaction to the exposure.

Once your immune system starts to respond, your body produces the hormone called “histamine.” This hormone works to help remove the intruder from your body, which is where the runny nose and watery eyes come from! While this process is helpful for eventually feeling better, it can make you experience a variety of unpleasant symptoms.

Common Spring Allergy Symptoms

  • Runny nose
  • Itchy, watery or red eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Headache

What Are the Treatment Options for Allergies?

Unfortunately, seasonal allergies do not have a cure. It is possible to grow out of certain allergy triggers or to experience lessened symptoms as you age, but you may have them for life. The best way to treat your allergies is by understanding your triggers and avoiding the outdoors on high-pollen count days.

We can also step in to help you manage your symptoms! If you aren’t feeling well, come see us for a full evaluation. We can discuss your most prominent allergy symptoms and some OTC medication options. Certain medications work best based on your symptoms and triggers, so we can chat and come up with the best treatment plan for you. Remember, while seasonal allergies are not life-threatening, severe allergic reactions are! Seek emergency medical assistance for severe reactions immediately.
