Influenza is one of the most common illnesses in the fall and winter season. Since it is a very contagious viral illness, it can spread through communities very quickly. Since it is so common, it is important to understand the common symptoms associated with the illness.
We want you to stay as healthy as possible this year! If you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, there is still time to provide yourself with the best protection possible. Our AFC Urgent Care Chapman Highway team explains all about the flu below, so read on.
What Does It Feel Like to Have the Flu?
Like any viral illness, you can contract the flu in a variety of ways. It spreads through coughing, sneezing and contact with infected people. Once you are infected and start to experience symptoms, it may start out with minor symptoms like a runny nose or a sore throat.
One big difference between the flu and other illnesses like the common cold is the symptom progression. While colds develop over a period of a few days, the flu tends to come on all at once. You might be feeling OK one minute and particularly miserable the next.
Symptoms to Expect With Influenza
- Fever
- Runny nose/congestion
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Muscle or body aches
How Can I Feel Better When I Have the Flu?
We wish you a speedy recovery! Unfortunately, the flu is a viral illness, which means it just has to run its course until your body overcomes the infection and you start to feel better. In the meantime, lay low at home and get plenty of rest. With fluids and some OTC medication, you should expect to feel better within a week or so.
If you are in a higher risk category for flu complications, it is important that you keep an eye on your symptoms. People over the age of 65, small children or people who have a chronic medical condition have a higher chance of developing a severe infection or experiencing secondary complications, like pneumonia, alongside the flu. Visit with your care team if you are concerned about how you have been feeling.
