Bug bites are common during this time of year. Whether it’s a mosquito, ant or bee, it’s not uncommon for one of these critters to let you know they exist in an itchy or painful way.

What Should I Do If I Get a Bug Bite?
When you sustain a bite or sting, it’s important to monitor what your symptoms are following the injury. If your pain, redness and/or swelling only occurs around the location of the bite, it is considered minor, and you can treat it using the methods we’ve listed in the section below.
If swelling occurs that isn’t localized, like a sting on the hand causing swelling of the arm, call our AFC team. This type of symptom isn’t actually as serious as it may seem in most cases, but it’s worth talking about with a medical professional.
How to Treat Insect Injuries
- Remove any stingers.
- Gently wash the area with soap and water.
- Apply a damp rag soaked in cold water or ice to the area of the bite or sting for 10 to 20 minutes. This helps reduce pain and swelling.
- Take an OTC pain reliever as needed.
- If the injury is on an arm or leg, elevate it.
When Should I Be Seriously Concerned About a Bug Bite?
While most bug bites or stings are easy to treat at home, as we said earlier, some can cause serious symptoms.
When you experience the symptoms we’ve listed below, seek medical treatment ASAP. The most concerning symptoms, like swelling around the mouth and trouble breathing, signify allergic reactions, which can be dangerous and even deadly.

- Trouble breathing
- Swelling of the lips, face, eyelids or throat
- Dizziness, fainting or unconsciousness
- A weak and rapid pulse
- Hives
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
