When to Visit Urgent Care with Flu Symptoms

October 30, 2019

The flu season is extremely common, with nearly 3 million cases reported each year between the early fall all the way through late spring. Your body is more vulnerable to the virus as it adjusts to dropping temperatures and changing seasons. Symptoms range from mild to more severe, which may require treatment and examination by a professional. Knowing when you need to visit your local urgent care is critical to preventing further medical issues.

Symptoms of the influenza virus

Because it is a virus, symptoms of the flu may vary case by case. While not every person may exhibit every symptom, the most common include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Headache and full body aches
  • Stuffed or runny nose
  • Fatigue
  • Dehydration
  • Persistent vomiting and/or diarrhea

What should I do if I develop flu-like symptoms?

At the onset of your flu symptoms, you should avoid going outside or being around people in order to avoid possibly infecting others. While at home, take time to rest in order to give your family plenty of time to heal, and drink plenty of fluids including water, teas, juices and sports drinks. Adults over the age of 18 can take over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen for ache relief. Do not give children under the age of 18 aspirin, which can cause a condition called Reye’s Syndrome to develop quickly. This can lead to liver and even brain damage.

When to visit urgent care with flu-like symptoms

You should visit urgent care with flu symptoms as soon as you develop the symptoms and especially if you are suffering from multiple of the symptoms below:

  • Fever and chills
  • Headache and full body aches
  • Stuffed or runny nose
  • Fatigue
  • Dehydration
  • Persistent vomiting and/or diarrhea

If you are considered a high-risk patient, you should visit urgent care within three days to prevent complications and check for additional health problems that could be exacerbating your symptoms. Patients considered high-risk include pregnant women, young children, the elderly and patients with chronic conditions and compromised immune systems such as diabetes, HIV, asthma and cancer.
