Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) typically affects the lungs and respiratory tract, causing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, and difficulty breathing– particularly in young children and older adults. While a sore throat can be present with an RSV infection, it’s not as common a symptom as in illnesses like the common cold or strep throat. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of RSV or a sore throat, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
For same-day RSV testing and treatment, visit the walk-in clinic at AFC Urgent Care Clark. Our board-certified medical providers specialize in treating a wide range of conditions, including RSV. We’re open seven days a week– just walk-in today!
Symptoms of RSV
RSV is a common virus that can cause mild, cold-like symptoms. It can lead to more severe respiratory infections, especially in infants and young children, as well as older adults with weakened immune systems. The symptoms of RSV usually begin 4 to 6 days after exposure to the virus. RSV is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets or by touching contaminated surfaces with the virus.
The most common symptoms of RSV includes the following:
- Sneezing,
- Sniffling
- Running or blocked nose
- Sore throat
- Coughing
- low-grade fever
- Headache
Understanding the Presence of a Sore Throat
A sore throat is a common condition indicated by discomfort, pain, or scratchiness in the throat. Often, it can be worsened by swallowing. It can be caused by many factors, including viral infections such as the common cold or influenza, bacterial infections such as streptococcus, environmental factors like dry air or pollutants, and irritants like smoking or shouting.
While sore throat is a prominent symptom in many respiratory infections, including the common cold and flu, it is not typically listed as a primary symptom of respiratory syncytial virus infections.
The reason is that RSV primarily affects the lower respiratory tract, leading to symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and congestion. Nonetheless, individuals with RSV may experience a spectrum of symptoms, and a sore throat could occur as a secondary or accompanying symptom in some cases.
RSV: Prevention and Treatment Options
Respiratory syncytial virus can be prevented through various measures, including:
- Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water
- Adopt cough etiquette.
- Keep children with colds home from school and daycare
- Avoid sharing utensils like spoons and plates with an affected person
- Avoid exposure to tobacco smoke
- As for babies, don't allow infected people to carry your babies or toddlers.
- Wipe contaminated surfaces like doorknobs and countertops with disinfectant
Mild cases of RSV often get resolved on their own, but in cases where they persist, antibiotics are not to be taken RSV because it is a virus. Supportive care recommendations to treat RSV include rest, hydration, and over-the-counter remedies to alleviate symptoms.
