When Should a Fever Go Away?

September 1, 2023

We can see it now—you are finally in the groove of work, school, sports and activities once more and you feel like you have it all together. The kids are gone, and you are settling down to work for the day when the school calls. Your youngest has a fever.

This time of year is one of the most common times for your kids to get sick as everyone comes together again under one roof at school. One of the most common symptoms that accompany many different illnesses is a fever!

Fevers aren’t necessarily a reason to panic; in fact, most fevers are actually working to help your child feel better faster. Read on as our AFC Urgent Care Dalton team explains the benefits of fevers.

Are All Fevers the Same?

Getting sick can look different for everyone depending on what you are sick with and how your body reacts. One common factor amongst otherwise healthy people is the arrival of a fever. Our bodies have the ability to recognize invaders like viruses or bacteria, and they will launch an immune response to help knock out the infection. Part of this response is to raise your body temperature.

Viruses and bacteria can’t replicate or grow as quickly in warmer environments, so your fever is actually giving your body the time it needs to fight the infection. This is why many providers will tell you to let the fever run its course if you are feeling OK. Doing so can actually help you feel better faster!

Illnesses That Can Cause Low-Grade Fevers

  • Influenza
  • Ear infections
  • Chickenpox
  • Respiratory infections
  • Urinary tract infections

What Is the Duration of a Fever?

Like always, it will depend on the person and the particular illness. However, most fevers only last anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days as your body fights hard against the invader. Once the battle has been won, the fever will subside. Slow down and get the rest you need during this time.

If your fever is lasting more than three days or reaches 103 degrees or higher, a visit with a medical provider is always recommended. Sometimes a more serious underlying issue is occurring and a closer look is needed. We are here for you and your fever seven days a week!

Symptoms Possible With High-Grade Fevers

  • Sensitivity to light
  • Confusion
  • A spreading rash
  • Seizures
  • Stiff neck

Fevers can be frustrating to deal with at home. Come see us at AFC Urgent Care Dalton any day of the week.
