Common STDs: Symptoms, Treatments, and Cures

May 1, 2018

std testing centersSexually transmitted diseases, or STDs, are a result of unprotected intercourse and can cause severe discomfort.

There are a variety of STDs that each have their own symptoms and treatments, some of which are curable. You should visit STD testing centers for routine exams to ensure you're STD free, although if you feel as though you have contracted an STD you should receive testing right away.

Some of the most common STDs are curable and can be cleared up if diagnosed early.

Chlamydia

People who have this sexually transmitted disease may not show any symptoms until years after they've contracted it, and some may never show any signs at all. Symptoms of chlamydia vary, but it is often associated with various types of discharge as well as pain during urination and/or intercourse. It can be cured with usually one round of antibiotics. If chlamydia is left untreated, it can cause infertility in both men and women, according to Zava, an STD testing company in the UK.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea, also known as "the clap," is often contracted along with chlamydia and can only be transmitted through sexual intercourse. It's a bacterial infection, however, and can be easily cured with antibiotics. People with this STD, similar to chlamydia, often don't show any symptoms. This STD cannot be transmitted by non-sexual means such as kissing, sharing drinks, holding hands, or any other casual types of contact. Gonorrhea can also lead to more serious health problems in the future, so getting tested at any of the STD testing centers is important.

Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is extremely common in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), who states that "more than one out of every six people aged 14 to 49 years have genital herpes." Unlike many STDs where sexual intercourse is required to transmit the disease, genital herpes can also be spread through contact with: a herpes sore, saliva or genital discharge, or the skin of the afflicted area. Herpes is an incurable disease, although it can be mitigated with medication and treatments.

Doctors continuously work to create better, more effective treatments and to find new cures, however, there just isn't enough (wo)manpower. By 2025, the U.S. will need more than 52,000 more primary care physicians to meet healthcare needs, according to current data.

The good news is that STD testing has become an easy procedure that's available at many low cost health clinics. While there are still some diseases that do not have cures, getting treatments is the best form of mitigation.
