What Should I Do to Protect Myself Against the New Omicron COVID-19 Variant?

January 15, 2022

The Omicron variant is the latest mutation of the COVID-19 virus. This variant is spreading across the world at frightening speeds, following the increased transmission rate trends seen in previous mutations. Research shows that patients who contract this variant of the virus are more likely to suffer from severe symptoms, including an increased risk of hospitalization and/or death.

The following information examines the new COVID-19 variant Omicron and reveals how you can protect yourself and family from this deadly virus.

Understanding Omicron

The World Health Organization recently confirmed Omicron is the latest variant of COVID-19. It is normal for people to be concerned about this new mutation because research is still limited this early in its discovery. Scientists are working hard to understand the differences seen in this mutation and determine the level of risk that it poses against public health and safety.

So far, we know that the Omicron variant has accumulated over 50 mutations, 30 of which are the virus’s spike protein. This is a cause for anxiety because the current vaccine attacks these protein spikes to protect the body from infection.

There is still much research to be completed and it will take time for scientists to learn more information about the Omicron variant.

Omicron and Delta are Spreading

The Omicron variant is spreading at an alarming rate around the world. However, the Delta variant is also still present and responsible for the majority of COVID-19 cases around the world. If Omicron follows the same trend as the Delta variant, it will transmit easier and faster than the previous mutations.

The majority of cases of severe illness are occurring not only in high-risk populations, but in those who are unvaccinated. Vaccinations save lives and protect those around you. Do your part by getting your COVID-19 vaccine or booster shot.

Follow Guidance

It is important to follow guidance from local, state, and government health organizations to protect yourself and your family against COVID-19. The most effective method of protection is vaccination.

Other Protection Practices Include:

  • Handwashing
  • Wear a Mask
  • Stay Home if Sick
  • Avoid Sick People
  • Don’t Share Food or Beverages

You should also get tested if you display any symptoms of COVID-19, including a sore throat, cough, fever, trouble breathing, and/or headache. Getting tested provides you with peace of mind knowing that you are not spreading the virus to your family or the public.

You should also get tested before and after traveling or before any gathering or event. Early detection will help curb the transmission of the virus.
