Coronavirus (COVID-19)

COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has become a prevalent threat to our communities for the past few years. Its symptoms can range from mild to severe depending on the severity of infection and overall health of the individual affected. COVID-19 is notorious for its ability to manifest asymptomatically– meaning it can show no signs or symptoms for many people. One distinctive feature of COVID-19 is the sudden onset of symptoms and the potential for severe respiratory distress. If you experience any of the symptoms listed below, it’s crucial to seek a professional medical diagnosis and treatment plan.

Common COVID-19 symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Fatigue
  • Body Aches
  • Loss of Taste/Smell
  • Sore Throat
  • Nausea/Vomiting

Influenza (Flu)

The flu shares some similar symptoms with COVID-19. However, the flu (caused by the influenza virus) tends to come on more rapidly and intensely than a common cold. It presents a sudden onset of symptoms and can lead to complications if left untreated. Vulnerable populations, like the elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions, are at a higher risk for flu-related complications including pneumonia. Annual flu vaccination remains a key preventive measure to reduce the spread of influenza, the severity of symptoms, and the risk of complications.

Common flu symptoms include:

  • High fever
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Fatigue

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

RSV primarily affects young children and infants; however individuals of all ages are at risk for developing an RSV infection. Symptoms can mimic those of a cold; however, RSV can progress to more severe respiratory symptoms. If left untreated, vulnerable populations could be at-risk for bronchiolitis or pneumonia. For parents, it’s crucial to monitor symptoms closely in young children. If your child is showing signs of dehydration or having difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical attention.

Common RSV symptoms include:

  • Runny/stuffy nose
  • Cough
  • Mild fever

Common Cold

The common cold, which can be caused by various viruses, is a frequent illness throughout the year. Unlike the flu or COVID-19, a cold does not generally cause severe symptoms or complications. The gradual onset of symptoms and the absence of a high fever are key indicators for the common cold. While uncomfortable, a cold is usually self-limiting. Rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications can help manage and alleviate symptoms.

Common cold symptoms include:

  • Runny/stuffy nose
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Sore throat
