What Should I Do Before Flu Season Starts?

October 12, 2020

2020 has been a hectic year to say the least. Nearly every aspect of our daily lives has been changed thanks to COVID-19. Although people were hopeful things would be back to normal by now, that clearly isn’t the case. As everyone continues to deal with COVID-19, flu season is quickly approaching too. Getting prepared before flu season starts is the best way to prevent yourself from getting sick and keep those around you healthy!

When Should I Get My Flu Shot?

Flu shots typically become available at the end of August or beginning of September in most of the US. That means that they’re available now! Experts recommend getting your flu shot at least 2 weeks before peak flu season begins. There is no specific date for when peak flu season starts because it changes from one year to another. Since you don’t know when the peak will be, it’s best to get vaccinated as early as possible so you’re protected no matter when it strikes.

Where Can I Get a Flu Shot?

Getting a flu shot is a quick and easy process that’s paid for in full by most major insurance companies. The best place to get your flu shot without having to worry about taking time off from work or school is an urgent care center. Urgent care centers open early and stay open late so you can get the care you need, when you need it! You can either walk in and be seen in the order you arrive or make an appointment ahead online so there will be no wait. Urgent care centers are equipped with multiple versions of the flu shot to meet your personal healthcare needs. Anyone over 6 months of age is eligible for some version of the flu vaccine at an urgent care center.

Flu Prevention

Getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu, but it isn’t the only way. During flu season you should practice frequent handwashing throughout the day. If you don’t have time to wash your hands, hand sanitizer is a good substitute. COVID-19 has led most regions to enforce mask wearing and social distancing which will also lower your risk of getting the flu! Avoid touching your face when you’re out of your home and encourage your friends, family members, and coworkers to get their flu vaccine too!
