Understanding Norovirus

According to the CDC, as we head into early spring, many communities are starting to see a rise in Norovirus cases. Norovirus, often mistakenly referred to as the “stomach flu,” is a highly contagious virus that can cause gastroenteritis, leading to symptoms like nausea and vomiting.

Common signs and symptoms of norovirus include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach cramping
  • Low-grade fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

How Norovirus Spreads Between People

Norovirus is well-known for its ability to spread rapidly in various settings, including homes, schools, daycares, and healthcare facilities. The virus is primarily transmitted through person-to-person, direct contact. The virus can be present in the stool or vomit of infected individuals, and touching contaminated surfaces or objects and then touching the mouse, nose, or eyes can lead to infection. The virus can survive for days or even weeks on contaminated surfaces. Additionally, consuming contaminated food or water is another significant mode of transmission. Given the highly contagious nature of this illness, it’s important to take proactive steps to prevent its spread.

When To Seek Medical Attention For Norovirus Infections

While norovirus infections can be self-limiting and resolve on their own within a few days, there are certain cases that warrant medical attention. This is especially true for vulnerable populations, including older adults, young children, and individuals with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems. If you experience severe dehydration, persistent vomiting, bloody stools, or other concerning symptoms, it’s best to seek prompt medical care.

In order to limit the spread of norovirus, it’s important to follow these preventive measures:

  • Practice good hygiene, especially after using the restroom, before/after eating, and while caring for someone who is sick
  • Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces that are prone to contamination
  • Avoid close contact with sick individuals until symptoms have resolved for at least 48 hours
  • Practice food safety while handling and preparing food
  • Be mindful of shared spaces where norovirus may be present
