How Much Worse Do Flu Symptoms Get for Untreated Patients?

February 24, 2023

Flu season is in full swing, and providers have already seen an increased number of patients suffering from the flu. While some flu patients can recover at home, others need treatment from a medical professional. If you’re on the fence about getting treatment for your flu symptoms, this is sure to help you decide!

Flu Symptoms

Flu symptoms typically occur 1-4 days after exposure to the virus. Around day 3 to 5 of symptoms, they may get worse. Common flu symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Body aches
  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Fatigue

Patients who are young children, elderly, or suffering from other chronic health conditions are more likely to experience severe symptoms.

How Do I Know If I Have the Flu?

If you notice flu symptoms, you might have the flu. Unfortunately, the same symptoms could be a sign of covid-19. The easiest way to determine if you have the flu is to visit an urgent care center for same-day testing. They’ll be able to accurately diagnose you and prescribe treatment as needed.

An urgent care can also test for other infections if your flu test is negative. This can make a huge difference if you unknowingly have covid-19 and need to isolate yourself from others!

Flu Treatment and Prevention

Most flu patients should begin by treating their symptoms at home. Getting plenty of rest and liquids is the key. You can take over the counter medication for symptom management. Fever reducers, pain relievers, and decongestants are common over the counter flu treatments.

If your flu symptoms are continuing to get worse or last longer than one week, you should seek treatment. Flu treatments include:

  • Tamiflu – this is taken by mouth as a pill or liquid for multiple days
  • Relenza – this is an inhaler taken by mouth for several days. People with asthma, COPD, and other chronic respiratory infections should not take Relenza
  • Rapivap – this is a one dose IV medication
  • Xofluza – this is a one dose treatment taken by mouth as a pill or liquid

Your doctor will determine the right treatment for you depending on what type of the flu you have, your symptoms, and previous medical history.

Preventing the flu is much easier than treating it! Visit a nearby urgent care center today to get your flu vaccine. Flu vaccines are extremely effective, safe, and covered by insurance.
