Understanding Measles

Measles is a viral infection that primarily affects children but can infect anyone who is not vaccinated. It spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can live in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours, making it incredibly contagious– up to 90% of unvaccinated people exposed to measles will become infected.

Measles symptoms usually develop 7 to 14 days after exposure and can include:

  • High fever (often 104°F or higher)
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Tiny white spots inside the mouth
  • A blotchy red rash that typically starts on the face and spreads downward

The rash usually appears 3 to 5 days after the first symptoms and can last about a week.

Measles Complications and Risks

Measles is more than just a rash and fever. It can lead to serious (and sometimes life-threatening) complications, especially in young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. These complications can include:

  • Pneumonia
  • Encephalitis (swelling of the brain)
  • Severe diarrhea and dehydration
  • Ear infections that may result in hearing loss

In rare cases, measles can be fatal. According to the CDC, for every 1,000 children who get measles, around 1 or 2 children may die from it.

Why Is There a Measles Outbreak Now?

The rise in measles cases in Denver and across the country is linked to a drop in vaccination rates. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted routine childhood vaccinations, and vaccine hesitancy continues to pose a public health challenge. Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, but it still circulates in other parts of the world. When international travelers bring the virus into the country, it can spread quickly among unvaccinated populations.

Prevention: The Importance of the MMR Vaccine

The best way to protect yourself and your family from measles is through vaccination. The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) is safe, effective, and widely available. The vaccination is recommended for:

  • Children: The CDC recommends children receive two doses- one at 12-15 months and another at 4-6 years.
  • Teens and Adults: Anyone who has not been vaccinated or isn’t sure of their vaccination status should speak with a healthcare provider.
  • Travelers: People traveling internationally should ensure they’re fully vaccinated before leaving the country.
