Summer Safety Guidelines for COVID-19 and Seasonal Health Risks

COVID-19 is on the top of everyone's mind. The case count continues to grow as the U.S now has over 3 million cases nationally. In Colorado, cases continue to climb daily throughout the month of July. While the virus remains a constant threat to our public health, it is crucial that patients also take time to take care of other health needs that arise this summer.

And as with every summer season we want to make sure that your family is protected and cared for whenever you need care. This summer is drastically different as many types of recreational facilities are delayed for opening due to the coronavirus. But residents are still expected to partake in personal recreational time as the weather warms up and becomes sunnier.

Below, we've listed some immediate prevention skills and techniques to help patients stay safe from seasonal summer risks as well as from COVID-19 risks. Remember seasonal safety risks of the summertime

Denver residents are likely to want to get out of the house due to quarantine and prolonged stay-at-home work. The summer weather makes it an ideal time to potentially go out for some fresh air, a hiking or camping trip, and other forms of recreation that is socially distanced from others. But with these activities comes the normal risks of summertime, which may be in the back of your mind as you're eager to enjoy the sunshine.

Sunburns, insect bites, dehydration, and other summer safety risks are all preventable if you take the time to do the following:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration in hot weather. Bring a water bottle on you to keep hydrated.
  • Wear sunscreen whenever exposed to the sun. Wear a minimum of SPF 30 to effectively prevent burns. Re-apply every 45 minutes to an hour.
  • Wear light clothing and a hat when possible during a hot day.
  • When camping or hiking, wear socks and protective clothing on your legs to avoid ticks and other insect bites.

COVID-19 Prevention Skills for Summertime

COVID-19 continues to be a major public health threat, which means that families will have to also account for general infection risks while enjoying their time in the summer. As a reminder, here are the most effective ways to prevent COVID-19:

  • Avoid large crowds of 10 people or more. Avoid crowded stores when possible.
  • Wash your hands frequently throughout the day and bring hand sanitizer on your person.
  • Wear a mask whenever you are out in public. Most places require a mask for entry
  • Avoid touching your bare face when in public.
  • Disinfect surfaces in your household to avoid the spread of germs.
