Could COVID-19 Cases Spike in Fall 2020?

August 24, 2020

Since COVID-19 began to spread in the US there has been talk about the spikes in the number of cases. These spikes are often referred to as hotspots or waves of the virus. Fall and winter are typically seasons that see a higher number of illnesses like the cold and flu. That common knowledge has led many people to wonder if COVID-19 will spike in the fall just like the common flu virus does. There is no simple answer to that question, but let’s take a closer look to get a better understanding of what the changing season means for COVID-19.

Is the First Wave Over?

Before we can worry about a second spike in COVID-19 cases we have to determine if the first wave is passed. Unfortunately, that changes depending on your location. The entire country hasn’t experienced the same spikes at the same time. Instead, certain regions saw big spikes when the virus first began, while others are just starting to see major spikes. States that have seen their first spike in cases followed by a steady decline include:

  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • Connecticut
  • Illinois
  • Massachusetts
  • Pennsylvania
  • Michigan

Other states, especially those in the south and west, are seeing spikes that continue to grow. It’s difficult to say that the first wave has passed when it’s affecting all areas of the countries at different times.

Will There be a Second Wave?

Experts believe that talking about a second wave is difficult when the first wave is still ongoing in many parts of the country. There are no direct correlations to the fall and winter seasons that would cause a second spike, but human behavior could. Human behavior and compliance with recommendations from health experts is what controls the ongoing first wave and the potential for a second wave. Social distancing, mask wearing, and avoiding large gatherings of people are things that everyone across the country should be doing to minimize the first spike in cases and help to manage a second spike in the coming months. Countries that have seen a steady drop in cases and haven’t yet been hit with a second wave are those that enforce strict guidelines to slow the spread of the virus. Access to testing, allowing people to work and go to school from home or in a socially distanced environment, and enforced use of masks are the key to managing the number of COVID-19 cases in the US.
