What Should I Know About Strep Throat?

Strep throat is usually a symptom of another medical condition that can make your daily routine harder. Having strep throat usually comes with moderate to even intense throat pain or soreness and may cause significant respiratory irritation.

  • Plenty of rest 
  • Drink plenty of fluids 
  • Gargle with saltwater 
  • Avoid respiratory irritants including cigarette smoke 

In addition, you can prevent the spread of germs or infection by routinely washing your hands, gargling saltwater, and by using over-the-counter relievers as intended. However, if you strep throat doesn’t get better then you may need to visit your doctor for increased treatment.

Doctors can usually provide patients with specific strep throat antibiotics that can significantly reduce strep throat symptoms. Oral antibiotics can help reduce a majority of strep throat symptoms if taken within 48 hours of an initial infection. School-aged children may even be able to go back to school if their symptoms begin to calm down.
