Having a cold may seem like a relatively minor illness and generally this is something you can easily treat at home until you get better. That said, cold symptoms and a stuffy nose can sometimes be misleading and potentially be the sign of a much more serious infection or illness.
Here at AFC Urgent Care Downingtown, we have experience in diagnosing a wide variety of different ailments and illnesses.
The board-certified physicians we have in our walk-in medical clinic can look at your symptoms and diagnose whether you have a virus or an allergy. Rest assured they can recommend the right treatment to put you on the road to recovery as soon as possible.
No matter whether you have a cold, an allergy or perhaps something more serious such as sinusitis, the first step to treating your ailments is an accurate diagnosis. This is something that we can do for you here at AFC Urgent Care Downingtown.
There are three main issues that could be causing your symptoms. These include:
If you have a cold, then there is a good chance you will have a sore throat, aches across your body, and fever too. Colds can take a few days to run their course but will clear up relatively fast. If you have a particularly bad cold, additional medication may be prescribed to lessen your symptoms and speed up your recovery. One of the best ways to prevent a cold is to get a flu shot, which is also a service we provide. Flu shots are also covered by most major insurances.
A combination of a runny and stuffy nose with watery, itchy eyes could point towards an allergy rather than the symptoms of a cold. You are likely to find that you have been exposed to a particular allergen that kick-starts your symptoms. These tend to reoccur periodically over time.
For those people who are finding their symptoms are specifically centred in the nasal area, sinusitis could be the cause. Sinusitis causes a painful and swollen feeling that radiates from your forehead down to your cheeks. Your nose will feel incredibly stuffy and you may also find that you have coloured mucus and a sore throat. Sinusitis can be very uncomfortable and the symptoms last for as long as 4 weeks.
Another issue that can appear alongside cold symptoms is a build-up of ear wax. This can occur over a period of time, leading to a painful problem. It is important that you do not try to clear out hardened, accumulated ear wax yourself as you could end up pushing the wax further into the ear, causing even further issues.
Whether your problem is an allergy, a cold or perhaps a nasty case of sinusitis, here at AFC Urgent Care Downingtown, we can help. We are the experts in a range of different medical issues. No appointment is ever needed to see one of our physicians or to access a service we offer. We are there to help you when you need us the most.

CALL US | (610) 518-1060We do not test for seasonal or food allergies at our location. Please consult your primary care physician for this service.
Our doctors will not give antibiotics for a common cold or an allergy. These medications will not be effective. Antibiotics can be prescribed for sinusitis caused by a bacterial infection.
Do you have a temperature, or general aches and pains? If so, you’re likely dealing with a cold, not seasonal allergies. Either way, AFC can help.
Nasal steroid sprays, antihistamines, and decongestants are often used to treat seasonal allergies. While many of these can be purchased over the counter, some patients need prescription strength allergy medicine.
