Deer tick on tree. AFC Urgent Care Danbury Offers Advice On Deer Ticks And Lyme Disease Prevention

As we start to approach the warmer months, it’s only natural to begin spending more time outdoors. But, we’re not the only ones that come out during the warmer months. So, do bugs and ticks!

Lyme disease caused by tick bites has been a pressing concern in the Northeast for years. Connecticut is notorious for the infamous “deer tick” that carries Lyme disease. If you’re out for a hike or stroll in your backyard, AFC Urgent Care Danbury wants to make sure you stay informed about the perils of Lyme disease and deer ticks. Here is a guide on how to avoid being bitten by one and what to do if you are!

Where Do People Get Bitten By Deer Ticks?

That’s the real question here. Is it In the deep woods? In their yards? Understanding the most common places where ticks hide or their natural habitat will help you avoid these areas.

If you’re out on a hike the likelihood of getting a tick latched onto you is when you enter or when you’re about to leave the wooded area. These areas are called the “edges” or the area between a yard or grassy plain and the woods.

You also want to think about areas where you see deer, mice, and chipmunks. Deer ticks are usually hiding and waiting to jump you when around these animals. If you plan on laying out in your yard or have a swingset for your kids, don’t put it in the shade or near the woods. Move it out, so it’s in the sun and in plain sight.

What Happens If I Get Bit By A Deer Tick? Will I Get Lyme Disease?

We hope not, but let’s try and prevent it. Prompt and proper removal is important to prevent infection. Why? Because The tick’s mouthparts are almost like fish hooks, but with reverse curves, making it harder to extract them!

Here are some tips on how to do so:

  • Do not put anything on the tick such as oils, alcohol, etc
  • Do not burn it off
  • Do not twist it off
  • Do not yank it off
  • Place fine tip tweezers close to skin on mouth part, lift and hold

If a tick latches onto you for more than 36-48 hours, you’re at risk for contracting Lyme Disease. This is why proper removal is crucial during this time. We recommend coming to see us within 24 hours so you can get it removed by a trained medical professional to avoid improper technique or the deer tick from regurgitating the contents from its digestive tract (where the Lyme Disease is) into your skin/blood stream.
