What Precautions Do I Need To Take For My Child With RSV?

RSV stands for respiratory syncytial virus. It's a common virus that can cause moderate to serious illness in children. It's not a new virus, but it’s supposed to be one of the most common viruses you outgrow during your childhood. But, because of the past two years and a lack of health precautions around COVID, there is now an outbreak of RSV causing children’s hospitals to fill up.

It is important not to ignore or forget about RSV because if left untreated, your infant or child may develop bronchiolitis causing breathing complications. RSV can also affect adults, too, especially in older people or those who are immunocompromised. Luckily for you, AFC Urgent Care Danbury has created a guide on what RSV is, how to test for it and what to do if your child does get sick.

What is RSV

RSV typically begins with cold-like symptoms that can last up to 7 to 10 days. In some cases, especially in infants, it can lead to more serious illness such as wheezing and difficulty breathing. If your child has any of these symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor right away as they may need oxygen or other treatment.

Most children will recover from RSV within 1 to 2 weeks without any long-term effects. However, some children may develop bronchiolitis Obliterans – also known as “popcorn lung” – which is a rare but serious condition that can occur after RSV infection. This condition permanently damages the tiny air sacs in the lungs and can lead to lifelong breathing problems.

What Are The Symptoms Of RSV?

Symptoms often mimic the same symptoms of flu. The signs and symptoms of RSV infections you should look out for are:

  • Coughing

  • Chest congestion

  • Wheezing

  • Fever

  • Sneezing

  • Runny nose

It is highly suggested to test for RSV and other illnesses to rule out what your child has. After all, we have more than one winter illness going around at this time.

How Do I Test My Child For RSV?

If you’re worried about your child’s health, you should get them tested for RSV right away. RSV test samples should be taken during the first few days after symptoms begin to get a better test result. Just like a COVID test, the amount of the virus in your nose decreases over time, which may make test results less accurate.

Luckily for you, AFC Urgent Care Danbury offers the RSV nasal swab test.

Tips On Preventing RSV Altogether

There are so many viruses to worry about this winter. We get that it may seem overwhelming including the fact that you're probably not too focused on it and are more focused on holiday prep work and shopping. But, don’t forget about how the Omicron variant ruined our holiday season last year.

Flu, COVID, RSV and other illnesses can potentially cancel your plans, which is why it’s important to take necessary precautions to avoid them altogether. If you do plan on hosting a family gathering or you’re going to one, try to avoid going if you or your loved ones are sick. Just like COVID and Flu, RSV is just as contagious and can spread through air droplets and by touching contaminated objects. There is no need to host if you are sick or to let someone come if they are sick themselves.

Always remember to wash your hands frequently to avoid spreading germs and to just stay home if you feel more comfortable. After all, it’s not just about you. It’s about your kids and your grandparents who have a weaker immune system than you. And yes, Adults can get RSV, too!
