What to Expect at your Visit

Be sure to bring any required forms that your board-certified provider may need to fill out. This includes the DOT Testing Form provided by the State of New Jersey. You will also need to bring a complete list of any current medications you're taking, as well as current doctors and their contact information.

If you have vision or hearing impairments, you must bring any glasses, contacts, or hearing aids to your visit. Drivers with diabetes must also bring their most recent Hemoglobin A1C and blood sugar logs.

Your visit will also include a basic physical exam to ensure you are healthy enough to perform the needs of the job. It will include a vision test, hearing test, urinalysis, and testing of the driver's blood pressure.

DOT physicals can only be performed by doctors certified by the FMCSA. While we have doctors on staff who are certified, it's best to call before visiting to ensure they are available that day.

Passing your DOT Physical

There are some health requirements you need to pass no matter what state you get your DOT physical in. While the physical exam is checking to make sure you're healthy, some additional aspects must be tested to ensure the safety of all drivers on the road.

Drivers must pass the "whisper test," meaning they can hear a whisper at a distance of 5 feet or less, with or without hearing aids. Doctors will also test for potential diabetes and an irregular heartbeat.

What are the Minimum Requirements for a CDL in New Jersey?

To obtain a CDL and drive within the State of New Jersey, drivers must be at least 18 years of age and in good physical condition. To drive outside of the state, drivers must be at least 21 and have three years of driving experience. You must also have your basic auto driver's license before applying for commercial.

Drivers must also be able to identify red, green, and amber to obtain their license and have 20/40 vision in each eye.
