Flu Shots

Influenza (also known as the flu) is a serious illness that affects millions of Americans every year, hospitalizing over 250,000 people. Unfortunately, 36,000 of these patients, mostly over the age of 65, die each year from health complications caused by the flu.

The flu season takes place during the months between October and May, with January being the peak time. With new strains of influenza occurring every year, your flu shot from last year won’t necessarily protect you this year. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends flu shots for those six months and older, especially those who face chronic health conditions.

There are a few reasons why you should get the flu shot, one of them being that it not only protects you against the flu, but it also protects those around you. Infants, seniors, and those with chronic health conditions can easily contract the flu by having weak immune systems, so by you getting the flu shot, you’re also protecting those who are more vulnerable to the illness. Also, if you do contract the flu virus, your symptoms would be much milder than if you didn’t get your flu shot. The flu shot is also recommended for pregnant women, as they can help prevent hospitalization of infants for the flu.
