What Do I Do if I Have the Flu?

So, you did your best by getting the flu shot and taking care of your body by eating healthy and getting sleep, but you still got influenza. Now what?

We are sorry you are feeling sick! The flu is a viral illness that will typically run its course in a week or so, but that doesn’t make it any less uncomfortable when you are sick. Read on from our AFC Urgent Care Farragut team to learn how to help yourself feel better when you have the flu below.

When Do Flu Symptoms Appear?

Any illness has the potential to cause minor to moderate symptoms. Many illnesses cause runny noses, sore throats and sneezing! If you start to feel sick, keep an eye on your symptom progression.

Most minor colds develop over the period of a day or two while influenza usually sets in quickly and makes you feel miserable almost immediately. If you have a fever in addition to your other symptoms, it usually indicates a viral illness like influenza.

Influenza Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Runny nose/congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Muscle or body aches

Should I Treat the Flu?

The majority of flu infections cause symptoms for about a week or so but then fade away on their own. While you are feeling sick, drink plenty of water, rest when you can and treat your symptoms if desired with OTC flu medication. We promise you will be feeling better in no time!

Those who are at a higher risk of serious illness need to be a bit more cautious. Anyone over age 65, small children or people with chronic medical conditions need to watch any symptom progression, as serious illnesses like pneumonia can also set in while you have influenza. It may be a good idea to visit with your care team when you get sick so they can evaluate you and determine whether any antiviral medications would be a good fit for you.

Flu-Friendly Foods

  • Broth, whether by itself or in a soup
  • Yogurt
  • Vitamin C-rich foods like oranges or broccoli
  • Oatmeal
